Bestiary of the anthropocene
A Bestiary of the Anthropocene is an illustrated compilation of hybrid creatures of our time, equally inspired by medieval bestiaries and observations of our damaged planet. Designed as a field handbook, it aims at helping us observe, navigate, and orientate into the increasingly artificial fabric of the world. Plastiglomerates, surveillance robot dogs, fordite, artificial grass, antenna trees, Sars-Covid-2, decapitated mountains, drone-fighting eagles, standardized bananas. Each of these specimens are symptomatic of the rapidly transforming “post-natural” era we live in. Often without us even noticing them, these creatures exponentially spread and co-exist with us.
Co-edited by Nicolas Nova and the collective DISNOVATION. ORG, A Bestiary of the Anthropocene seeks to capture this precise moment when the biosphere and technosphere merge and mesh into one new hybrid body. What happens when technologies and their unintended consequences become so ubiquitous that it is difficult to define what is “natural” or not? What does it mean to live in a hybrid environment made of organic and synthetic matter? What new specimens are currently populating our planet at the beginning of the 21st century?
DISNOVATION.ORG is a research collective set up in Paris in 2012, whose core members include Maria Roszkowska (Poland/France), Nicolas Maigret (France, B. 1980 – in residency as part of the Cité internationale des arts “2-12” program), and Baruch Gottlieb (Canada/Germany). They work at the interface between contemporary art, research, and hacking, and compose tailor-made teams for each investigation together with academics, activists, engineers, and designers. More specifically their recent artistic provocations seek to empower Post Growth imaginaries and practices by challenging the widespread faith that ‘economic growth’ and ‘technological fixes’ will solve the ecosystemic disruptions they produced in the first place. They recently co-edited A Bestiary of the Anthropocene with Nicolas Nova, an atlas of anthropic hybrid creatures, and The Pirate Book, an anthology on media piracy.

Inspirée des bestiaires médiévaux et des observations de notre
planète à l’ère de l'Anthropocène, cette installation présente diverses
créatures et objets hybrides de notre temps. Conçu comme un manuel de
terrain, ce bestiaire nous incite à élaborer de nouvelles perspectives
d'observation, de navigation et d'orientation dans un monde en rapide
transformation. Plastiglomérats, chiens robots de surveillance,
fordite, gazon artificiel, arbres-antennes, SARS-COV-2, montagnes
décapitées, aigles chasseurs de drones, bananes clones. Chacun de ces
spécimens est symptomatique de l’ère « post-naturelle » en pleine
mutation dans laquelle nous vivons. Souvent sans même que nous les
remarquions, ces spécimens se propagent de façon exponentielle et
coexistent avec nous.
Co-édité par Nicolas Nova et le collectif DISNOVATION.ORG, Le Bestiaire de l'Anthropocène cherche à capturer ce moment précis où la biosphère et la technosphère fusionnent et se rejoignent en un nouveau corps composite. Que se passe-t-il lorsque les technologies et leurs conséquences involontaires sont si omniprésentes qu'il devient difficile de définir ce qui est « naturel » ou non ? Que signifie vivre dans un environnement hybride composé de matières organiques et synthétiques ? Quelles autres créatures peuplent le bestiaire de ce début de XXIe siècle ?
DISNOVATION.ORG est un collectif de recherche créé à Paris en 2012, dont les membres principaux sont Maria Roszkowska (Pologne/France), Nicolas Maigret (France, 1980 – en résidence par le biais du programme “2-12” de la Cité internationale des arts) et Baruch Gottlieb (Canada/Allemagne). Ils travaillent à l’interface de l’art contemporain, de la recherche et du hacking, et composent des équipes sur mesure pour chaque investigation en collaboration avec des universitaires, des activistes, des ingénieurs et des designers. En particulier, leurs récentes provocations artistiques visent à alimenter des réflexions et des pratiques Post-Croissance, tout en opérant une déconstruction méthodique des promesses techno-solutionistes. Ils ont récemment coédité Le Bestiaire de l'Anthropocène et The Pirate Book.
